Hans On Organizing Closet Tips:
Bedroom Closet
If you have unused space at the top of your closet, add shelves for storing off-season
clothes.

The only clothes in your closet should be ones that fit, you like, and make you look
good.

Store the shoes you don't wear every day in shoe boxes and stack them in your
closet. Take pictures of the shoes and glue them to the end of the box. Now you can
see what is in the box without having to open it.

Keep 3 laundry baskets in the closet for dirty clothes, a basket for whites, one for
colors and one for jeans. Place your clothes in the appropriate basket as they are
removed. This allows you to determine when you have a full load and saves sorting
time when it’s time to wash clothes.

Group hanging clothes by type and/or color (i.e., suits/dresses, dark to light).

Store outfits together. Hang a shirt or jacket with the pants or skirt it’s worn with.

Belts and scarves can be hung on hooks on the wall, belt hangers or rolled up and
kept in baskets or boxes.

When you clean out your closet, get rid of clothing that you haven’t worn in a year, or
no longer fits.

Save time getting your clothes out of the closet by coordinating hangers to hang in
the same direction.

Store purses low, within reach, in covered baskets or containers.

Hall Closet
Install large hooks on the walls inside the closet to hang bags, dog leashes, clothes
brushes, backpacks, etc.

Store mitts, hats and other items for each member of the family in stackable
containers labeled with their name. Store the containers for the adults up high and for
the children down low.

Linen Closet
Keep sheet sets together by storing them in one of the pillowcases

If you don’t have a linen closet, or you need extra space, consider these alternative
storage spaces:

  • Sheets in a dresser drawer in a spare room
  • Table linen in the dining room buffet, china cabinet or picnic basket as decor in
    the dining room
  • Blankets in a large bin, trunk or container under the bed
